The Brief
Foxtail Coffee Co. commissioned a large-scale mural for their Pineda Commons location in Florida, with the artwork inspired by the distinctive architecture of the Pineda Causeway Bridge.
The mural design was developed by the Foxtail Coffee Co. design team and the client. The brief was simple: make a statement and fill the wall with the full design, creating a bold visual feature for the coffee shop.
I was hired by MLynn Creative, a talented wife-and-wife muralist team, helping to bring the design to life on site.
The project was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with fellow professional mural artists while working on a commercial interior in an international setting.
Bringing the Design to Life
As the artwork had already been developed by Foxtail Coffee Co.'s design department, my role was to accurately translate the supplied artwork onto the large-scale wall.
The design took inspiration from the Pineda Causeway Bridge and its Floridian surroundings, using a bright, bold and energetic colour palette.
Rather than leaving areas of the wall unused, the composition was designed to occupy the full surface, creating an immersive feature that immediately draws attention within the coffee shop, something that Foxtail do in all their branches so well.
The scale and vibrancy of the artwork were particularly important to ensure that the mural had the visual impact required within a busy commercial environment.
A Bold Floridian Colour Palette
The colour palette was supplied as part of the Foxtail Coffee Co. design and embraced the bright, bold character of Florida.
The saturated colours give the mural an energetic quality that works particularly well within the relaxed, contemporary atmosphere of the coffee shop.
The finished artwork was designed to feel unmistakably Floridian while remaining consistent with the client's original creative direction.
Technical Execution
The wall was professionally prepared by contractors on site and handed over ready for painting.
The mural was painted using Behr satin finish paint, selected at the client's request for its durability and suitability for a busy commercial environment.
Approximately 30m² of mural was completed over four days.
Working at height was an important part of the installation. Scaffolding was supplied by MLynn Creative, and the project required appropriate working-at-height training and public liability insurance.
The Challenge: Painting Around the Architecture
The wall wasn't a completely uninterrupted canvas.
The design had to be carefully painted around existing hanging light fittings and decorative wooden beams, while maintaining the accuracy and flow of the supplied artwork.
Working at height also meant constantly moving around the scaffolding to reach different areas of the mural while maintaining consistent lines, proportions and coverage.
The logistics of the project added another layer, with a 45-minute journey to the site each day during the four-day painting schedule.
Despite these practical challenges, the mural was completed within the planned time frame.
International Collaboration
One of the highlights of this project was the opportunity to work alongside MLynn Creative, a professional muralist duo based in Florida.
Working collaboratively on a large commercial mural meant coordinating painting areas, colours, techniques and progress to ensure the finished artwork felt completely cohesive.
For Squiggly Ink, it was also an exciting opportunity to take my mural painting experience overseas and contribute to a high-profile commercial interior project in Florida.
