School IT Suite Mural | House of Kin
Bespoke wall and ceiling mural designed and painted for a new pupil IT suite at Chesham Prep School, creating a playful focal point from a simple Wi-Fi-inspired graphic.
The Brief
House of Kin commissioned Squiggly Ink to bring their mural concept to life as part of the interior design for a new IT suite at Chesham Prep School.
The brief was to recreate their Wi-Fi-inspired design across an 8m-wide wall and pitched ceiling, while incorporating one existing circular window and two additional round mirrors into the composition.
The challenge was to utilise the porthole window as part of the artwork, by creating a graphical focal point that felt as though it had been designed specifically for the architecture of the room.
The finished mural needed to complement the wider interior scheme while adding personality and visual impact to the pupils' new IT space.
Designing the Mural Around the Architecture
The original concept and design mock-ups were supplied by House of Kin.
My role was to translate the digital concept into a hand-painted mural at architectural scale, adapting the Wi-Fi symbol so that it worked across both the vertical wall and pitched ceiling.
The circular window presented an interesting design opportunity and it’s position naturally lent itself to the centre of the Wi-Fi symbol. With the addition of the two new circular mirrors, we achieved a symmetrical composition that connected the wall, window and ceiling.
The result is a mural that feels integrated into the room rather than simply applied to the wall.
Colour Palette
The colour palette was carefully selected to work alongside the furniture and wider interior scheme.
The mural uses:
Farrow & Ball Wine Dark – Modern Emulsion for the deep blue wall section
Farrow & Ball Red Earth – Dead Flat for the Wi-Fi symbols
The earthy terracotta tone creates warmth against the deep blue, while the softer palette complements the peach, tan and neutral tones used throughout the IT suite.
Painting & Technical Execution
The walls were professionally prepared and primed by the decorator before I arrived on site, providing a clean surface ready for the mural installation.
Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion and Dead Flat were selected for their suitability and durability within the space.
The mural covers approximately 16m², with the main wall measuring around 8m wide x 2m high, extending into the pitched ceiling.
The entire mural was completed in approximately 8 hours over two days allowing for drying time in-between coats.
The Challenge: Painting the Ceiling
One of the biggest technical challenges was transferring the Wi-Fi symbols onto the pitched ceiling while maintaining the correct scale, proportions and visual alignment with the wall design.
A design that looks perfectly symmetrical on a flat digital drawing can quickly become distorted when it moves across different planes and architectural features.
Careful measuring, positioning and scaling, were therefore essential to ensure that the symbols remained visually balanced when viewed from within the room.
Working across the wall and ceiling also meant considering how the design would be experienced from different viewpoints throughout the IT suite.
A Mural Designed for the Space
The finished artwork creates a strong focal point at the end of the IT suite, drawing together the architectural features, colour palette and furniture scheme.
The circular window and mirrors become part of the design rather than interruptions to it, while the Wi-Fi motif reinforces the function of the room in a simple, playful way.
It's a great example of how a bespoke interior mural can work alongside an interior design scheme, adding character and visual interest without competing with the rest of the space.
